DGT driving licence exchange (canje)
What it is
The DGT lets you exchange licences from countries with an agreement (including the UK) for a Spanish licence. Non-EU licences can be used for 6 months after you become normally resident. EU/EEA licences stay valid while in force, so exchanging them is voluntary.
Good news for UK licence holders: since 20 May 2025 the DGT offers an online canje without a cita
if you have Cl@ve or a digital certificate (or use a representative). You then go to the Jefatura only to hand in your original licence and
collect a provisional one. Try this before hunting for appointments.
Documents usually needed
- A medical/psychological fitness report (informe de aptitud psicofísica) from a driver's medical centre
- For UK (GB) licences: a Check Code from GOV.UK (Northern Ireland licences: from the DVA)
- The official application form, your ID (passport or residence document) and proof of residence in Spain (TIE or EU registration certificate)
- Proof that you weren't resident in Spain when you got your licence, and your original licence
- The fee tasa 2.3, shown by the DGT as €28.87 when we checked on 22 Oct 2026 (card payment in person)
This is a summary. Your situation may need other documents. The official page is what counts.
How to book
For the in-person route, book a cita on the official DGT cita previa page, by phone on 060, or in the miDGT app. The DGT says you can have only one canje appointment over time. The booking site uses captcha protection, so we don't check it automatically.
