NIE number (Número de Identidad de Extranjero)

Free guide · last checked against official sources on 22 Oct 2026 · not legal advice

What it is

The NIE is the identification number Spain assigns to foreign nationals. You apply for it with form EX-15. According to the Policía Nacional page, you shouldn't be in Spain irregularly and you need to state why you need the number. The page also says it is normally resolved within about 5 days. If you are outside Spain, you apply through a Spanish consulate.

Documents usually needed

  • Application form EX-15, filled in and signed
  • Your passport (or national ID card for EU citizens), plus a copy
  • Proof of payment of the fee, modelo 790 código 012 (check the current amount on the official fees page)
  • A document showing why you need the NIE (for example a job offer or a property purchase)

This is a summary. Your situation may need other documents. The official page is what counts.

How to book

Book on the official Extranjería/Policía cita previa site: choose your province, then the NIE procedure (the exact name varies by province). The site asks for your personal details and a captcha before it shows availability. That's why we can't check it for you.
